About The Show

► Tell us about you and your podcast

Vito came up with the idea. He is an absolute movie and podcast junkie. He loves a wide range of movies. Talking about movies is a passion for Vito and he wants to share that with everyone (and boy does he have energy). He asked his friends, Mike and Jesse, to join a show talking about movies. Not just talking about movies though, talking about whether we want to show these movies to our kids and at what age. Talking about whether this is an established classic for our generation that we want future generations to see. Talking about our own dads and the movies they showed us.

Mike was on board immediately. He loves movies, especially those that have strong themes throughout. He is the poet of the group and loves to talk about the bigger picture a story implies. "What does this mean?" is a pretty consistent phrase from him.

Jesse is here. He is on board. And he has opinions. Usually more about characters than anything else. Plots are fun, but plots are devices for character development. And Jesse is here to bring that up, time and again.

Together NYFM has a dynamic trio of dads. Dads who are here to talk about movies in relation to their kids and their own dads. Also, movies we love.

► Why & how did you start this podcast?

We all listen to podcasts and we were all craving conversation at the time. This pod was conceived of as a way for a few friends to start having consistent conversations with each other and grew from that. It grew into something they all care about. We started talking about what movies to cover and structure of episodes over the phone, especially text.

► How'd you find the time and funding to do this podcast?

Funding is easy enough. With three people contributing, we all pay monthly for Zencastr recording (saves a lot of time in terms of editing!) and for Podbean services to distribute our episodes. That ends up being $10 a month from each person, so it is very doable. The hardest part is to find time, but even that is ok. Coordinating schedules between three dads can be tough, but we just need a couple hours to record, and we can all find that amount of time in a week. Also, editing takes time, but with Zencastr and three people to all help, it really isn't that much work.

► What do you gain from podcasting?

These three dads are better friends than before and that in itself has been worth it! On top of that though, podcasting is a great creative outlet. This has been a life-saver during the COVID months.

► How does your podcasting process look like?

We talk about movies with a structure, so prep is really not that hard for us. We watch the movie (sometimes more than once), find some articles/videos about the movie, think of some questions that we want to talk about on the episode about the movie in particular, find time to record episode, we use Zencastr for both audio and video, record, assign editing, promote podcast on all the socials (Facebook, reddit, insta, twitter), rinse and repeat for the next week.

► How do you market your show?

We create social accounts for the podcast and join groups/follow those with similar interests. Podcasting groups usually let you post your episode there. Also, we have joined a lot of movie groups to promote our episodes. Mostly though, it has been word-of-mouth. Friends have liked it from the beginning and they are more than happy to listen and tell more people. We have also found that having a guest on the show, just a friend, and then they spread the word about it even more.

► What advice would you share with aspiring (new) podcasters?

Just do it! Don't worry about the expensive mics or anything like that. Get an episode structure down, prep for a couple months, record a few months worth of episodes and edit one month worth, then release out through a distributor like Podbean.
